What Happens During a New Patient Exam?

A new patient visit involves a comprehensive evaluation of every aspect of your oral health to establish a baseline for future dental care. It will start with a medical review, and we will ask you about any current oral health concerns. Next, we will take digital X-rays to identify hidden problems, such as early decay, bone loss, cysts, impacted teeth, or other abnormalities.

Dr. Abd will examine your teeth and any existing dental work to rule out decay, chips, cracks, or damage. He will also assess your gums and look for signs of periodontal disease, including red, swollen, or bleeding gums. Dr. Abd will evaluate your jaw and bite to make sure there are no issues that may result in future tooth wear or TMJ pain.

An essential component of your new patient exam is an oral cancer screening to rule out abnormalities. The simple and painless screening saves lives because treating oral cancer in its earliest stages offers the best chance for a positive outcome.

After examining your smile, Dr. Abd will discuss his findings. He will work with you to create a custom treatment plan, including any pressing restorative treatments and preventive measures needed to maintain optimal oral health. He may also include recommendations for cosmetic dentistry procedures to enhance the appearance of your smile.

What Happens During Recall Dental Exams and Cleanings?

If you have healthy teeth and gums, we recommend scheduling regular dental exams and cleanings every six months. If, however, you have periodontal disease or are at a higher risk of developing tooth decay, we may recommend more frequent visits.

Routine Dental Exams: Your twice-yearly dental exams are similar to what you can expect during a new patient exam. Dr. Abd will evaluate your teeth, gums, and mouth to ensure they are free of problems. If, however, he identifies signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or other concerns, he will recommend prompt treatment to prevent minor issues from becoming more serious ones later on.

Dental Cleanings: Our dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and gum line using a dental instrument called a scaler. At Cypress Bend Dental, we use an ultrasonic scaler, which blasts away plaque, tartar, and tooth surface stains, leaving your smile clean and bright. Having your teeth cleaned twice a year has been shown to lower the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.
